Manchester Club
The Home of Golf and Tennis in Mandeville

The Manchester Club is a private members club, but visitors are always welcome.

It is very popular with golfers and tennis players alike, and being almost in the centre of Mandeville it is also a popular social meeting place.

The club was built in 1865, the course shortly after, and it is reputedly the oldest in the Western hemisphere.

During the 1930's Stanley Thompson, a Scotsman and a well known Golf Course Architect in Canada, was involved in the redesign of the course.

And although it is only a 9 hole course with a par of 35, the tees for the back nine are different to those for the front nine, and so you do not play the same holes twice.

I played this course for many years when living in Mandeville, and it is one of the nicest and most challenging golf courses anywhere.

The stone walls marking the boundary of the course come into play on almost every hole.

The greens are small and bunkered, with blind shots into several of them.

The 4th hole, a par 4, is known as the Bamboo hole. It is one of the most beautiful golf holes anywhere.

From a slightly elevated tee you look down the fairway towards two large clumps of Bamboo, with a small and narrow hollow in between.

The other side of this hollow, in between the two clumps of Bamboo, is the small green.

The hollow is the target for your drive.

A long drive can reach, but it has to be very accurate or else you are in the middle of the bamboos.

Play short, and you have to carry up and over the bamboos, which overhang the green.

Quite simply there is not a bad hole on the course.

You will find the atmosphere in the club very friendly.

The Manchester Golf Week held in the summer every year is the highlight of their golfing calendar.

I can heartily recommend a visit to the Manchester Club, and being over 2000 ft above sea level the climate is cool and ideal for golf.

I was in Jamaica in Feb 2011, and played the course three times.

The bamboo lined hole is now # 9 and still very difficult to play.
